About the concert
På svenskaOne of this year’s ECHO Rising Stars performs classical music on the Hungarian national instrument.
Hungarian musician Áron Horváth began playing his country’s national instrument – the cimbalom – at the age of seven. He initially performed traditional Hungarian folk music, but over the years has broadened his scope to include both classical and jazz. In 2023, he was admitted to the prestigious Liszt Academy in Budapest to study classical cimbalom, and in the same year became a member of two prominent ensembles: Elán, which explores the folk music of Central and Eastern Europe, and Intergeese, a jazz trio performing original compositions.
At this concert we encounter the classical Áron Horváth – but with a touch of jazz. The programme opens with music by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, arranged for cimbalom. This is followed by folk-inspired music by the Hungarian jazz musician Emma Nagy. More Hungarian sounds come in the form of a piece by composer György Kurtág – a tribute to Hungarian artist Ferenc Berényi (1927–2004) on the occasion of his 70th birthday – as well as one of Horváth’s own works. The concert concludes with a version for cimbalom of Esbjörn Svensson Trio’s beautiful From Gagarin’s Point of View.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the classical stars of tomorrow – today. Rising Stars is a unique and forward-looking collaboration between 23 of Europe’s leading concert halls, all part of the ECHO – European Concert Hall Organisation. Each year, a handful of young artists and ensembles from across the continent are selected to tour the network’s venues and meet international audiences. Time and again, Rising Stars artists have gone on to enjoy successful international careers. Áron Horváth is nominated by Müpa Budapest and the Wiener Konzerthaus.
