Laura Stephenson
Member of the orchestra since 1992.
Laura Stephenson has been the harpist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 1992. She has appeared as a soloist with the orchestra on several occasions and frequently performs in chamber music concerts.
Stephenson was born and educated in Canada, where she studied primarily with Judy Loman and also undertook orchestral studies with Alice Chalifoux. She was principal harp of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Canadian Chamber Ensemble. Deeply interested in contemporary music, she has long been a member of KammarensembleN, the specialist ensemble for new music, with which she has also undertaken several international tours and made numerous CD recordings.
She is also an active chamber musician outside Konserthuset, and has appeared at festivals including the Gotland Chamber Music Festival, Lapland Chamber Music Festival, Saxå Chamber Music Festival and the Turku Music Festival.
Stephenson also performs on the Italian Baroque harp, the so-called arpa doppia, a chromatic harp from the 17th century with two or three parallel rows of strings.
Alongside her performing career, she is a dedicated teacher and teaches both privately and at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
